Our 5-Point Safety Standard — How We Vet Every Product

Our 5-Point Safety Standard: How We Vet Every Product at Everetts Place

Every product on Everetts Place must pass all five criteria in our safety standard before it is listed for sale. This is not a marketing claim — it is a sourcing requirement. If a product doesn't pass, it doesn't get stocked. Full stop.

Here is exactly what we check, why each criterion matters, and how we verify it.

Point 1 — GOTS Certification

Applies to: All clothing, pajamas, sleep sacks, swaddles, crib sheets, blankets, and any textile product.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's strictest organic textile certification. It covers the entire supply chain from organic farm to finished garment, prohibiting toxic dyes, formaldehyde finishes, heavy metal inks, and synthetic flame retardants.

We verify every brand's GOTS certificate directly through the global-standard.org database before listing. Certificates are checked annually when they renew.

Point 2 — GREENGUARD Gold

Applies to: Nursery furniture, crib mattresses, changing tables, nursery storage, and any hard goods used in your baby's sleep environment.

GREENGUARD Gold (by UL) certifies that products meet strict chemical emission limits — specifically the California Section 01350 standard designed for children's environments. It tests for over 10,000 VOCs including formaldehyde, which off-gasses from conventional MDF furniture for years.

We verify current certification through UL's spot.ul.com database for every nursery product we list.

Point 3 — MADE SAFE Certification

Applies to: Baby skincare, bath products, cleaning products, and any leave-on or rinse-off personal care items.

MADE SAFE is the most rigorous certification for personal care and household products in the US. It screens every ingredient against a database of known toxic chemicals, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and environmental hazards. Unlike EWG Verified, MADE SAFE requires that no ingredient be on any harm list — not just the most common ones.

For baby skincare specifically, this means no parabens, no synthetic fragrance, no formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, no 1,4-dioxane, and no petroleum-derived mineral oil.

Point 4 — PFAS-Free

Applies to: All products — but especially sleep sacks, outerwear, waterproof items, and any fabric with water-resistance claims.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are "forever chemicals" used in water-resistant and stain-resistant fabric treatments. They accumulate in the body, do not break down in the environment, and are linked to hormonal disruption and immune system effects. There is no safe level of PFAS exposure for infants.

We require brands to provide written confirmation or third-party test documentation that no PFAS-based treatments have been applied to any product we list. This applies to DWR coatings, moisture-wicking finishes, and stain-resistant treatments.

Point 5 — Non-Toxic Dyes

Applies to: All printed or dyed textile products.

Even a GOTS certified base fabric can be compromised by inks and dyes applied after certification. We specifically require that all prints, graphics, and dyes meet the following standards:

  • No azo dyes that can release carcinogenic aromatic amines
  • No heavy metal-based pigments (lead, cadmium, chromium VI, nickel)
  • No phthalate-based plastisol inks
  • No formaldehyde-based color fixatives
  • Water-based inks only for screen prints

This criterion is verified through brand questionnaires, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 test reports, or GOTS certification (which covers dyes within the certified scope).

What Happens When a Brand Doesn't Pass?

We don't list them. We have declined to stock several popular and well-known baby brands because they could not provide documentation for one or more of these criteria. We do not make exceptions for brand recognition, price point, or popularity.

If a brand we currently stock loses certification or cannot renew their documentation, we remove their products until the issue is resolved.

What About Products That Don't Have a Textile Component?

For toys, feeding products, and other non-textile items, we apply the most relevant subset of our 5-point standard plus category-specific requirements:

  • Toys: No BPA, BPS, or phthalates in plastics; non-toxic paint and finishes; ASTM F963 or EN71 safety testing
  • Feeding products: BPA and BPS-free; no phthalates; food-safe materials only
  • Nursery decor: GREENGUARD Gold where applicable; non-toxic finishes
