What Is GOTS Certified? The Complete Parent's Guide to Organic Baby Textiles

If you've been shopping for organic baby clothes, you've seen the term GOTS certified everywhere. But what does it actually mean — and why does it matter for your baby? This guide breaks down everything parents need to know, including how to verify a GOTS claim and what to look for when shopping.

What Does GOTS Stand For?

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic natural fibers. Unlike simple "organic cotton" claims, GOTS certification covers the entire supply chain — from the farm where the fiber is grown, through spinning, dyeing, cutting, and sewing, all the way to the finished garment on the shelf.

This matters because a garment can be made from organic cotton but still be processed with toxic dyes or chemical finishes. GOTS prevents that.

What Does GOTS Certification Require?

To earn GOTS certification, a product must meet all of the following:

  • Minimum 70% certified organic fiber (products with 95%+ are labeled "organic," those with 70–94% are labeled "made with organic")
  • No toxic dyes or chemicals — prohibited substances include azo dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals like lead and cadmium, phthalates, and chlorine bleaches
  • No synthetic flame retardants — a critical point for baby sleepwear
  • Wastewater treatment at all processing stages
  • Fair labor standards — no child labor, fair wages, safe working conditions throughout the supply chain
  • Annual third-party audits — every certified facility is independently inspected every year

Why Does GOTS Matter Specifically for Babies?

Babies have thinner, more permeable skin than adults. They absorb more of what touches them. They also spend up to 16 hours a day in their clothing and bedding — far more skin contact time than adults. The chemicals in non-organic textiles — residual pesticides, azo dyes, formaldehyde-based finishes, and flame retardants — have all been linked to skin irritation, respiratory issues, hormonal disruption, and developmental concerns at the levels of exposure relevant to infants.

GOTS certification eliminates all of these risks at the source.

How to Verify a GOTS Claim

Unfortunately, some brands falsely claim GOTS certification. Here's how to verify:

  1. Visit the official GOTS database at global-standard.org
  2. Search for the brand or manufacturer name
  3. Confirm the certificate is current (not expired) and covers the product category

At Everetts Place, we verify every brand's GOTS certificate before stocking their products. You never have to do this yourself when shopping with us.

GOTS vs. "Organic Cotton" — What's the Difference?

Claim What It Covers Third-Party Verified?
GOTS Certified Entire supply chain — fiber, processing, dyes, labor Yes — annual audit
GOTS "Made With Organic" Same as above, but 70–94% organic fiber Yes — annual audit
"Organic Cotton" (no cert) Fiber growing only — no processing requirements No
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Tests finished product for harmful substances Yes — but not organic fiber
"Natural" or "Eco-Friendly" No regulated definition — marketing claim only No

Frequently Asked Questions About GOTS Certification

Is GOTS the same as organic?

No. "Organic" can be applied to fiber alone (like organic cotton grown without pesticides) but doesn't cover how it's processed. GOTS covers the entire chain. A shirt can be made from USDA certified organic cotton and still be dyed with toxic azo dyes — and not be GOTS certified.

Does GOTS certification apply to bamboo fabric?

Yes. Bamboo can be GOTS certified when it is grown organically and processed mechanically (into bamboo linen). Most bamboo baby clothes are made from viscose/rayon from bamboo, which is a chemically intensive process and cannot be GOTS certified — but can carry other certifications like OEKO-TEX. We carry both and are transparent about which certification applies to each product.

How often is GOTS certification renewed?

Every GOTS certificate must be renewed annually through a third-party audit. A brand cannot claim GOTS certification from five years ago — the certification must be current.

Are all products at Everetts Place GOTS certified?

Most textile products are GOTS certified or made with GOTS certified materials. Some products carry alternative certifications (OEKO-TEX, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE) that are appropriate for their product category. We display the relevant certification on every product page.
