What Is GREENGUARD Gold Certification? A Parent's Guide to Nursery Chemical Safety

When you're setting up a nursery, GREENGUARD Gold is one of the most important certifications to look for on furniture, mattresses, and any hard goods. Here's exactly what it means, why it matters for your baby's health, and how to verify it.

What Is GREENGUARD Gold?

GREENGUARD Gold (formerly called Children's GREENGUARD) is a third-party certification from UL that verifies products meet strict chemical emission standards. It measures how much a product off-gasses volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals into the air during normal use.

GREENGUARD Gold is the stricter version of GREENGUARD certification — it requires products to meet the California Department of Public Health's Section 01350 standards, which are specifically designed for environments where children spend time.

Why Do VOCs Matter in a Nursery?

Most conventional furniture is made with MDF (medium-density fiberboard), particle board, or plywood bonded with formaldehyde-based adhesives. These materials continue to release formaldehyde gas for years after purchase — a process called off-gassing.

Babies are especially vulnerable because:

  • They breathe at floor level where chemical concentrations are higher
  • They spend 12–16 hours a day in the nursery
  • Their developing respiratory and immune systems are more sensitive to airborne chemicals
  • Formaldehyde is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the IARC

What Does GREENGUARD Gold Actually Test?

GREENGUARD Gold certified products are tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions including:

  • Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde (from adhesives and finishes)
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — total and individual limits
  • Carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins at California Prop 65 levels
  • Phthalates in plastics and vinyl components
  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury)

GREENGUARD vs GREENGUARD Gold — What's the Difference?

Feature GREENGUARD GREENGUARD Gold

Which Baby Products Should Be GREENGUARD Gold?

  • Crib mattresses — your baby's nose is inches from this surface for years
  • Cribs and bassinets
  • Dressers and changing tables
  • Gliders and rocking chairs
  • Nursery storage and shelving
  • Paint — look for zero-VOC plus GREENGUARD Gold for nursery wall paint

How to Verify GREENGUARD Gold Certification

Look up any product in UL's free database at spot.ul.com. Search by brand name or product name. Certificates expire annually and must be renewed, so confirm the certificate is current. At Everetts Place, we verify GREENGUARD Gold status for all relevant nursery products before listing them.
