Why Choose Organic for Your Baby?

Babies have thinner skin, breathe faster, and are far more vulnerable to chemical exposure than adults. Here's why organic matters more in those first years than at any other time in life.

The Science: Why Babies Are More Vulnerable

Your baby's skin is 20–30% thinner than adult skin, which means it absorbs more of what it comes into contact with — including the chemicals used in conventional fabric production. At the same time, your baby's immune system, nervous system, and organs are still developing. Exposure to pesticide residues, chemical dyes, and synthetic finishes during this critical window can have effects that last a lifetime.

The average conventionally grown cotton crop uses more than 10% of the world's pesticides and 25% of all insecticides — making it one of the most chemically intensive crops on earth. Those chemicals don't fully wash out. Trace amounts remain in the fibers and transfer to skin with every wear, every nap, every cuddle.

🌿
Thinner Skin = More AbsorptionBaby skin absorbs chemicals at a significantly higher rate than adult skin. What touches their skin enters their body.
💨
Faster Breathing = More ExposureBabies breathe twice as fast as adults, meaning they inhale more airborne chemical particles from synthetic fabrics and finishes.
🧠
Developing Brain & Nervous SystemThe first 1,000 days are critical for brain development. Chemical interference during this window is linked to neurodevelopmental concerns.
🌙
18+ Hours of Contact DailyBabies sleep 12–16 hours a day. That's 12–16 hours their skin is in direct contact with whatever their pajamas and sleep sacks are made of.

What Makes a Product "Organic"?

Not all "natural" or "organic" claims are created equal. Here's what to look for — and what the certifications actually mean:

GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) The gold standard in organic textiles. GOTS certification covers the entire supply chain — from the farm where the cotton is grown to the factory where it's sewn. No toxic pesticides, no synthetic dyes, no formaldehyde-based finishes. Brands we carry with GOTS certification include Finn + Emma, Smart Bottoms, MakeMake Organics, and Lucy Lue Organics.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Tests the finished product for over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals, and formaldehyde. Every component — thread, buttons, zippers, labels — must pass. OEKO-TEX certified products are tested safe for skin contact, even for babies. Many of our brands carry this certification alongside or in place of GOTS.
USDA Organic Primarily applies to agricultural products and some skincare ingredients. When you see USDA Organic on a baby skincare product like Sweet Harvest Farm, it means the ingredients were grown without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or artificial fertilizers.
PFAS-Free PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are "forever chemicals" used to make fabrics water-resistant and stain-resistant. They don't break down in the body or the environment. PFAS-free sleep sacks and baby gear avoid this class of chemicals entirely.
Look beyond the label: The word "natural" has no legal definition in textiles. A product can say "natural" and still be treated with synthetic dyes, chemical softeners, or flame retardants. Always look for a third-party certification like GOTS or OEKO-TEX.

The Fabric Guide: What to Choose & Why

Organic Cotton

Grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMO seeds. Soft, breathable, durable, and gets even softer with every wash. The most versatile organic fabric for all seasons. Perfect for everyday clothing, sleepwear, swaddles, and bedding.

Bamboo Viscose

Derived from bamboo pulp, bamboo viscose is naturally temperature-regulating (warmer in winter, cooler in summer), hypoallergenic, and incredibly soft — often softer than cashmere. It wicks moisture away from skin, making it ideal for sleepwear. Look for brands that use a closed-loop manufacturing process to minimize environmental impact. Great for: pajamas, sleep sacks, swaddles, onesies.

Muslin

A loosely woven cotton fabric that's ultra-breathable and gets softer with each wash. Perfect for swaddle blankets, burp cloths, and nursing covers because it allows airflow while providing warmth. Organic muslin from brands like Newcastle Classics is GOTS-certified and dye-free.

What to Avoid

  • Polyester / synthetic blends — trap heat, don't breathe, and may off-gas chemical residues
  • Conventional (non-organic) cotton — heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides during growth
  • Flame retardant treatments — look for snug-fit sleepwear which is exempt from chemical flame retardant requirements
  • Formaldehyde finishes — used to make fabrics wrinkle-resistant; a known irritant and carcinogen
  • Synthetic fragrances in baby care products — can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals under the umbrella term "fragrance"

Organic Is Also Better for the Planet

Choosing organic for your baby isn't just about protecting them — it's about the world they'll grow up in. Organic cotton farming uses 71% less water and produces 46% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional cotton. No pesticide runoff means healthier soil, cleaner water, and safer farming communities.

When you buy from organic brands at Everetts Place, you're voting for a cleaner supply chain — one that doesn't poison the land to make a onesie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic baby clothing worth the extra cost?

Yes — especially for sleepwear, which your baby wears for 12–16 hours a day. The cost difference between conventional and certified organic is often smaller than people expect, and the peace of mind is priceless. Many of our organic brands are also more durable, meaning they last through multiple children or resell well.

Do I need to wash organic baby clothes before use?

Yes — always wash new baby clothing before the first wear, organic or not. This removes any residual dust or handling from shipping and softens the fabric further. Use a fragrance-free, dye-free baby detergent for best results.

What's the difference between "natural" and "organic"?

"Natural" has no legal definition in textiles and no third-party verification. "Organic" backed by GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification has been independently tested and verified. Always look for a certification seal, not just a marketing claim.

Are bamboo products truly eco-friendly?

Bamboo the plant is highly sustainable — it grows fast, requires no pesticides, and regenerates after harvesting. However, turning bamboo into fabric (viscose) involves a chemical process. Brands that use a closed-loop system recapture and reuse those chemicals, making the fabric much more eco-friendly. When in doubt, look for OEKO-TEX certification on the finished fabric.
