Every one of these started as a question someone actually asked us — in the shop, over email, or at the counter while a baby slept in a car seat on the floor. We kept giving the same answers, so we built the answers instead. All five are free. None of them asks for your email, and none of them needs you to buy anything to be useful. “How many bodysuits do I actually need?” This is the most common question we get, and almost every answer online is a vague list. The honest answer depends on one thing more than any other: how often you do laundry. Not how much your baby needs — how much of the wardrobe is sitting in the machine at any given moment. The capsule wardrobe calculator asks for your wash frequency, whether there's daycare, and which season the size will actually be worn in. Then it gives you numbers. Real ones, for one child, one size. A warning it will give you for free: buy for the season the size will be worn, not the season you're shopping in. A baby who is three months old in July is wearing six-month clothes in October. “What does this tag actually mean?” Bamboo viscose. Modal. French terry. Lyocell. The label tells you the truth, and almost nobody explains what the truth means. Type what the tag says into the fabric decoder and it will tell you what the fiber is, how it behaves, and where it belongs. Bamboo viscose, for instance, is bamboo put through a chemical process — which is why honest labels say viscose. It drapes beautifully and feels cool. It is also a processed fiber, not a raw plant, and a label that implies otherwise is selling you something. The rule underneath all of it: the fiber content on the tag is a regulated fact. The words on the front of the package — natural, gentle, pure, eco-friendly — are not. When the two disagree, believe the tag. “Is this label worth anything?” Four certifications turn up over and over on baby products, and they answer four completely different questions. GOTS follows organic fiber through every stage of manufacturing. OEKO-TEX tests what is in the finished product. GREENGUARD Gold measures what a piece of furniture releases into the air. MADE SAFE screens what went in to begin with. The certification checker explains each one, and — more usefully — what each one does not cover. OEKO-TEX is not an organic certification and never claimed to be. That confusion runs in the dangerous direction, because a conventional fabric can carry it honestly. It also tells you how to verify a claim: a real certification comes with a certificate number you can check in the certifying body's own public database. If a brand says “certified” without one, treat it as marketing until proven otherwise. We would rather you held us to that standard too. “What should the baby sleep in tonight?” The TOG calculator has been here a while, and it is still the one people use most. We have just expanded it with the part a chart cannot tell you. Put a thermometer in the room where your baby actually sleeps — homes are deceptive, and an upstairs nursery holds heat long after the rest of the house has cooled. Check the back of the neck or the chest, never hands or feet, which run cool in a perfectly comfortable baby. And when the chart and your judgment disagree at three in the morning, err lighter. A slightly cool baby wakes up and complains, which is the outcome you want. The crib itself stays bare. Warmth goes on the baby, never into the sleep space. “What do I need before the hospital?” Four lists — newborn essentials, hospital bag, nursery setup, seasonal add-ons — in the baby checklists. You can tick them off and the page remembers where you got to, or print the whole thing if paper suits you better. Most of what is on them is not a purchase. “Furniture anchored to the wall” costs nothing and matters more than most things you could buy.
