When Do Babies Start Wearing 6-Month Clothes? A Size Guide

by Shopify API on Jun 26 2026
Baby clothing sizes are one of parenthood's great confusions. A "3-month" onesie and a "3M" footed pajama from two different brands can differ by two inches in length. And babies don't read size charts — a chunky 8-week-old might be swimming in 3-month clothes in length while bursting out of the snaps. Understanding Baby Clothing Size Labels Baby clothing is typically sized by age (NB, 0-3M, 3-6M, 6-9M, 12M) or sometimes by weight and height. Age sizing is a rough guideline — it represents what the average baby of that age weighs and measures. Real babies are not average. A better approach is to check the weight and height ranges on each brand's size chart, then measure your baby. When Do Babies Actually Wear 6-Month Clothes? On average, babies reach the 3–6 month size around 3–4 months and the 6–9 month size around 5–6 months. But there's enormous variation. A baby at the 90th percentile for height may be in 6-month clothes at 10 weeks. A petite baby might wear 3-month sizes past 4 months. Here's a general guide by weight: Newborn (NB): up to ~8–9 lbs 0–3 months: 8–13 lbs, up to ~24 inches 3–6 months: 13–17 lbs, up to ~26 inches 6–9 months: 17–21 lbs, up to ~28 inches 12 months: 21–25 lbs, up to ~30 inches Brand Sizing Comparison: Kyte, Angel Dear, and Mushie Kyte BABY: Runs true to size with generous stretch due to bamboo fabric. The stretch means their size ranges accommodate a wider band of sizes. Many parents find Kyte runs slightly long in the body. Angel Dear: Also runs true to size. Their bamboo and organic cotton footies tend to be slightly more fitted than Kyte — size up if your baby is at the top of a weight range. Mushie: OEKO-TEX certified and generally runs true to size, though some styles run slightly narrow. Great for average-build babies. How to Buy Ahead Without Overstocking The classic mistake: buying a full wardrobe in 0-3M sizes. Babies grow out of them in weeks. A smarter approach: buy 4–5 items in newborn, 6–8 in 0–3M, and then stock up in 3–6M and 6–9M. Bigger sizes are harder to find on sale during the newborn prep rush, and babies actually stay in them longer. Stock one size ahead for seasonal items like coats and snowsuits. The Footie Pajama Exception Footie pajamas are the item most likely to need sizing up. Babies' feet hit the end of the footie before the rest of the body outgrows the torso. If your baby has long legs, go up a size in footies even if their weight suggests the smaller size. Cramped feet in footies are uncomfortable and can restrict circulation.
