The Complete Guide to Non-Toxic Baby Products (2026)
The short version: "Natural," "eco-friendly," and even "organic" mean almost nothing without third-party certification to back them up. This guide cuts through the greenwashing and gives you a practical, certification-backed framework for building a non-toxic environment for your baby — from their first onesie to their nursery furniture.

Why Non-Toxic Baby Products Matter More Than You Think
Babies are not small adults. Their skin is thinner and absorbs more. Their livers and kidneys are still developing and cannot process toxic compounds as efficiently. Their immune and endocrine systems are in a critical window of development where even small chemical exposures can have outsized effects.
The average baby is exposed to dozens of synthetic chemicals daily — from flame retardants in pajamas, to formaldehyde off-gassing from nursery furniture, to PFAS in waterproof fabric treatments, to synthetic fragrance in baby wash. Individually, each may be below regulatory thresholds. Cumulatively, the picture looks very different.
The good news: avoiding the worst of it is not complicated. It requires knowing which certifications to trust and which claims to ignore.
The 5 Certifications Every Non-Toxic Parent Should Know
1. GOTS Certification — for all textiles
The Global Organic Textile Standard is the gold standard for organic baby clothes, pajamas, sleep sacks, swaddles, and crib sheets. It covers organic fiber sourcing, processing chemistry, dyes, and labor practices across the entire supply chain. If a textile doesn't carry GOTS, the word "organic" means very little.

2. GREENGUARD Gold — for nursery furniture and mattresses
Conventional nursery furniture off-gasses formaldehyde from MDF and adhesives for years. GREENGUARD Gold certification verifies that a product meets strict VOC emission limits designed specifically for children's environments. Your baby's crib, mattress, and dresser should all carry this.

3. MADE SAFE — for skincare and personal care
The most rigorous US certification for personal care products. Every ingredient is screened against a database of known toxins — not just the most publicized ones. For baby wash, lotion, and diaper cream, MADE SAFE is the bar.
4. PFAS-Free — for anything water-resistant
"Forever chemicals" are found in water-resistant outerwear, sleep sacks, bibs, and changing pads. There is no safe level of PFAS accumulation for infants. Any product with a water-resistance claim needs a PFAS-free declaration from the brand.

5. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 — a solid backup
When GOTS is not available (for example, with mechanically processed bamboo), OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished product for harmful substances. It doesn't cover organic fiber sourcing, but it does verify the product in your hands is free from the worst chemicals.
The Greenwashing Red Flags to Ignore
The following claims appear on thousands of baby products and mean nothing without certification:
"Natural" — has no regulated definition. Arsenic is natural.
"Eco-friendly" — no standard, no verification, no enforcement
"Organic" (without GOTS or USDA Organic logo) — applies only to the fiber, not how it was processed
"Non-toxic" — no regulated definition in textiles or personal care
"Hypoallergenic" — no FDA standard; not meaningful
"Free from harmful chemicals" — self-reported, unverified
"Plant-based" — tells you the source, not the safety
Room-by-Room Guide to Non-Toxic Baby Products
The Nursery
The nursery is where your baby spends the most concentrated time. Start here.
Crib: GREENGUARD Gold certified solid wood. Avoid MDF.
Mattress: GREENGUARD Gold certified, ideally with a natural fiber core (wool, cotton, or latex). Look for Prop 65 compliance.
Mattress protector: PFAS-free TPU. Not vinyl/PVC.
Crib sheets: GOTS certified organic cotton. Keep 3 in rotation.
Paint: Zero-VOC latex. Air the room for at least 2 weeks before baby arrives.
Rug: Natural fiber (wool, cotton, jute). No synthetic stain treatments.
Air: HEPA purifier. Change filters per schedule.
Baby Clothing
Babies wear clothes touching their skin for all but a few minutes a day. This is the highest-contact chemical exposure point in their environment.
GOTS certified organic cotton or OEKO-TEX certified bamboo
No "easy care" or "wrinkle-resistant" finishes (formaldehyde-based)
Tight-fitting sleepwear OR sleep sack — not loose sleepwear (the tight fit replaces the need for flame retardants)
Tagless or flat-printed labels

Sleep Products
PFAS-free, GOTS certified sleep sack matched to room temperature (use our TOG Calculator)
GOTS certified organic muslin swaddles
No loose blankets, pillows, or bumpers in the crib (AAP safe sleep guidelines)
Bath and Skincare
MADE SAFE or EWG Verified baby wash, shampoo, and lotion
Fragrance-free only — "unscented" is not the same as fragrance-free
Zinc oxide diaper cream only — not petroleum-based
Mineral SPF (zinc oxide) sunscreen for babies over 6 months
GOTS certified washcloths and hooded towels
The Everetts Place Approach: Why We Vet So You Don't Have To
We are a shop, not a testing laboratory: we do not audit factories, commission lab testing, or issue certificates. We do not accept PR samples in exchange for listings. Where a brand states a certification, we repeat it as that brand's claim.
The result is a store where you can shop any product on any page with confidence — without needing to research every brand, read every label, or decode every certification. That's what curation actually means.
