Hospital Bag Checklist for Baby: What You Actually Need
The hospital bag panic is real. Every list online seems to include 47 items, and half of them are things you'll never actually use. Here's a practical, honest checklist focused on what you actually need for baby — with organic options where they matter most.
Clothing (Keep It Minimal)
Hospitals keep nurseries warm, and most have newborn clothes available if needed. That said, it's lovely to have your own. Pack:
- 2 newborn onesies (organic cotton or bamboo — newborn skin is extra sensitive in those first hours)
- 1–2 sleepers or footie pajamas
- 1 going-home outfit (one size up from newborn if baby is measuring large)
- Newborn mittens to prevent scratching
- 1 warm hat (the hospital will provide one, but a soft GOTS certified option is nicer)
Sleep and Swaddling
Hospitals have swaddle blankets and bassinets, so you don't need much here. But:
- 1–2 organic muslin swaddle blankets (soft, breathable, beautiful for first photos)
- Your own swaddle if you've learned a specific technique during classes
Feeding Supplies
- Nursing bras and pads if breastfeeding
- Nipple cream (lanolin or organic alternatives)
- Formula samples if you're formula feeding or want a backup
- Bottles — most hospitals have some, but having your own preferred brand is helpful
Comfort Items
- A soft lovey or small comfort toy (not for sleep — just for skin-to-skin cuddles)
- Your phone charger
- Comfortable clothes for your stay
- Snacks — hospital food timing is unpredictable
What to Leave at Home
Skip: elaborate nursery items, multiple outfit options (babies change constantly and you'll have help), anything expensive you'd be upset to lose. Keep the bag light — you'll have more visitors and stuff than you expect, and a lighter bag is easier when you're recovering.
The Car Seat
Pack this one separately — the hospital won't discharge baby without you demonstrating it's properly installed. Install it in your car before your due date and have it checked at a certified car seat inspection station (free in most areas).
